Now’s the time to get your Council nomination ready! If you’ve ever wanted to help decide Whyalla’s future, it’s time to put your hand up and make a difference.

Nominations for candidates in this year’s Local Government Elections open on Tuesday 23 August, with several candidate information sessions planned throughout August.

Whyalla City Council CEO Justin Commons said the candidate information sessions are an ideal chance to share information and answer questions from interested residents about what it takes to be a council member.

“We encourage anyone who is interested to come along to a candidate briefing session. It’s a chance to learn the ins and outs of being a council member and ask questions about the process and the requirements,” Mr Commons said.

“Becoming a council member is an effective way of helping create a future for Whyalla that you and your community can be proud of and enjoy,”

Mr Commons said Council was keen for the council member body to represent the wide variety of people who call Whyalla home.

“As a modern, progressive council, we are keen to continue to see nominees from diverse backgrounds, particularly those who have historically been under-represented,” he said.

This includes:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • People living with a disability
  • Women
  • Young people (over 18)

“If you are passionate about your local community, willing to work as part of a team, and keen to learn and make a difference, then you are an ideal candidate for a position on council,” Mr Commons said.

There are a number of ways to find out more if you’re interested:
