Final Boarding Call for Howard

Howard Aspey has made this week his final boarding call, deciding to retire after more than 20 years with Whyalla City Council.

The larger-than-life character has had two stints with council, working for numerous departments – including the civil crew and parks and gardens – before spending the majority of his years at the airport, including being Manager Operations for the past six years. Most importantly, you may remember him as Mr Incredible on one of council’s Whyalla Christmas Pageant floats!

“Council’s been an amazing place to work – I’ve met some great people and I’ve really enjoyed my time,” Howard said.

He's seen numerous upgrades to the airport in that time, with the latest due to be complete in the coming months after his departure. Howard said there had been plenty of memorable moments over the journey, none more-so than the stray emu that wandered into the terminal, clearly determined to finally take flight!

"They can actually be pretty aggressive, but the wildlife guy just carried him out like a teddy bear!"

See Howard in action trying to help Wildlife Rescue Whyalla escort our (still) flightless friend out of the airport!

As an avid gardener, he plans to spend his spare time establishing his property near Tumby Bay, where he will ultimately retire with wife Di, who he thanked for her support over the years.

“I’d also like to thank everyone I’ve worked with – I’ve learned so much and gained some great friendships which will hopefully continue.”
