It’s time to get the green thumbs working.  For the fifth year in a row, Whyalla Council is celebrating National Tree Day with a free plant giveaway!

Council is offering one native shrub for each person who comes down to the rear gate of the Ada Ryan Gardens nursery compound between 9am and 12noon on Saturday 30 July.

Council staff will hand out the free native shrubs and provide valuable information on the plants, where the best place would be to plant them in your own garden and how to care for them long-term.

There will be no public access to the nursey compound on the day – the giveaway will take place at the rear gate in Ada Ryan Gardens. Residents are reminded to adhere to social distancing requirements, follow staff instructions and be patient if needing to line up.

DRAFT ANIMAL MANAGEMENT PLAN CONSULTATION

The draft City of Whyalla Animal Management Plan 2022-2027 has been completed and we are now seeking community feedback to ensure that the plan meets the needs of our community.

The Animal Management Plan focuses on community expectations and our commitment to provide a dog and cat management service that is consistent, fair and includes continuing education of the legislative provisions of the Dog and Cat Management Act (the ACT) which came into effect on 1 July 2018.

There are three main objectives that are highlighted in the plan:

  • Responsible Owners – residents are informed and aware of their responsibilities and comply with their legal obligations as pet owners
  • Educated Community – The community is kept engaged with regular media releases, face to face information sessions and reminders of dog and cat laws.
  • Proactive Council – engaged and skilled officers educate, investigate, and enforce the law if required on all dog and cat issues reported by residents or visitors.

Community consultation is open from Tuesday 26 July to Wednesday 31st August 2022.

You can view the plan and provide feedback online at the website.

Physical copies of the Animal Management Plan are also available for review at the Civic Centre and Whyalla Public Library and feedback can be provided by:-

COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2022

council election

If you’ve ever wanted to help decide Whyalla’s future, then now is the time to put your hand up to make a difference!

Nominations for candidates in this year’s Local Government Elections open in August, so now is the time to start thinking about the impact you could have in your community and on the future of our city.

As a modern, progressive council, we are keen to continue to see nominees from diverse backgrounds, particularly those who have historically been under-represented, including:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • People living with a disability
  • Women
  • Young people (over 18)

There are a number of ways to find out more if you’re interested:

  • Head to our website
  • Attend one of our numerous information sessions in the coming weeks (more details soon)

DOGS AND CAT REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW DUE

dogsandcats

If you’re a dog or cat owner, now is the time to register your pets 🐶😺

All dog and cat owners need to register their animals annually with Council between 1 July and 31 August (a late fee may apply if registered after 31 August 2022), with rebates applying if your dog or cat is de-sexed and microchipped.

All registration fees go towards services and facilities that benefit dogs and cats in our city, including dog parks; waste bag dispensers; staff to manage animals that are lost etc; and the provision of a pound for lost animals.

The process to renew your dog and cat registration in Dogs And Cats Online (DACO) is quick and simple – go to www.dogsandcatsonline.com.au and login (if you are an existing user) or register. Payment for registrations can be made securely online in DACO using a Visa credit or debit card.

Council customer service staff are also happy to assist residents with any issues relating to DACO, and payments for registration can still be made over the counter at Council’s Civic Building in Darling Terrace for those preferring that method.

For more information on dogs and cats, visit dogandcatboard.com.au or whyalla.sa.gov.au.

STEELWORKS TOURS RECOMMENCED

steelworks tour
Whyalla resident Graeme Lowe (second on the right) brought his visitors from NSW Tony and Sue Bonanno (second and third from the left) for a tour of the Whyalla Steelworks, with Tour Guide Rod Masters (first on the left) and Des’s Cabs Bus Driver Bert Warner (first on the right).
Tony was surprised at the sheer size of the steelworks and Sue never realised the process was so complex!

STEELWORKS TOURS ARE BACK!

The tour bus will depart from the Whyalla Visitor Centre each Monday, Wednesday and Friday (excluding public holidays) at 9.30am.

The tour will take approximately 1.5 hours and along the journey you will hear stories and see behind the scenes of more than 100 years of significant Australian iron and steelmaking history.

Bookings are essential and closed in footwear is required.

Contact the Visitor Information Centre on (08) 8645 7900 or toll free 1800 088 589 for more information and to book your seat onboard the tour bus

WHYALLA FORESHORE CAFÉ POD OPERATOR WANTED

cafepod

We've extended the expression of interest (EOI) process for operators of the foreshore café, ensuring there are a wide range of offerings from which the final decision can be made.

An EOI document has now been sent across the Eyre Peninsula to ensure a broader local audience can participate in the process.

This is an exciting opportunity to capitalise on upcoming developments not only in the foreshore area, but across the city, with once-in-a-generation hydrogen projects commencing soon, expected to bring an influx of workers to the city.

Expressions close Friday 5 August – head to the website to find out more.
