May is South Australian History Festival month and to celebrate we are providing FREE access to the Whyalla Maritime Museum and gardens.

If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit the Museum and Gardens, here’s your chance! The Whyalla community is invited to enjoy the beautiful gardens and the interesting displays in the museum FREE OF CHARGE from Monday 8May until Sunday 14 May 2023.

The museum will be open from 10.00am-4.00pm each day and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch or utilise the free barbecue while enjoying the beautiful gardens.

As part of the South Australian History Festival, ‘The Largest Ships in the Southern Hemisphere: Whyalla Shipyards in the 1970’s’ display will also be available for viewing in the museum.

A cost will apply for those who would like to climb aboard the HMAS Whyalla for the guided tour at either 11.30am or 1.30pm. Bookings are essential for ship tours. Please note: Access to the HMAS Whyalla is by guided tour only, and enclosed footwear is a must.

The HMAS Whyalla (J153) was launched on 12 May 1941 and was one of 60 Bathurst-class corvettes constructed during World War II and the first ship built in the Whyalla Shipyards. May this year commemorates the 82nd anniversary of her launch.

Please contact the Whyalla Visitor Centre & Maritime Museum on 1800 088 589 for more information, or to book a tour of the ship.

The centre is located on the Lincoln Highway, Whyalla. Visit www.whyalla.com for more information on visiting Whyalla.
