Traineeships and Apprenticeships

The Whyalla City Council's traineeship program provides trainees with the skills, training and experience to kick start their career. Upon completion of the program, trainees will have a nationally recognised qualification and the opportunity to apply for roles within Council.

Applicants from the following groups are encouraged to apply:

  • Young people
  • Aboriginal people
  • Torres Strait Islander people
  • People from a non-English speaking background
  • People with disability or impairment.

Common types of traineeships and apprenticeships in Council include:

  • Business administration
  • Infrastructure operations
  • Horticulture
  • Civil construction
  • Mechanical

How to apply 

All traineeships will be advertised via the Council website. We encourage you to monitor our Employment Opportunities page.

Trainee roles may be advertised at different times in the year depending on business needs, however, we will generally commence an annual intake in October each year.  If you are interested in applying for a traineeship or apprenticeship at Whyalla City Council, please make sure you visit our website for application details.

The recruitment process includes:

  • Application
  • Interview (which could include alternative selection techniques)
  • Reference checks
  • A pre-placement medical examination which includes a drug and alcohol and audiometric screenings (mandatory for preferred Trainee)

Important eligibility information

To apply for a traineeship with Council, you must be:

  • 15 years and over
  • An Australian or New Zealand citizen
  • A person with a permanent residency visa, a temporary protection visa or a temporary residency visa.

Aaron Andreason

Meet Aaron Andreasen.  Aaron completed a three-year Horticulture traineeship with Council, achieving a Certificate III in Horticulture.  In May 2022 Aaron was appointed to a permanent role within Council’s Infrastructure Operations team, as a qualified Horticulturalist.

Aaron held previous positions in retail, customer service and labouring and said he initially applied for the traineeship to better his career prospects.  Aaron said the traineeship had assisted in boosting his confidence and improved his wellbeing.  “The opportunity to work with Council has provided me with a great career experience which has helped build a future for myself and support my young family,” Aaron said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the large variety of work that Council has to offer and have valued the training and support that has been provided to me.  I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of taking a traineeship or apprenticeship to give it a shot, it will set you up for life.”

Matt Inglis

Matthew (Matt) Inglis was also successful in being appointed to a permanent role with Councils Infrastructure Operations team, following completion of a three-year Horticulture traineeship, achieving a Certificate III in Horticulture.

Matt decided to initially apply for the traineeship with Council as he had keen interest in helping to improve and better the City and he grew up watching his Dad and Grandfather both enjoy careers in Local Government.

Matt says the opportunity has been very rewarding and he strongly encourages anyone thinking of taking on a traineeship to go for it and commit to it.  He says he feels very proud to have achieved a qualification whilst broadening his skills and experience.  “I love the work that I do with Council, it really gives me a real sense of pride and community spirit”.
