General Information

Whyalla City Council has operated the Whyalla Airport since the ownership was transferred from the Federal Government in 1991. In 2014, a highly anticipated upgrade and expansion of the former terminal building was undertaken which included the upgrade of the toilet facilities within the terminal. Also included was the major re-development of adjacent car parks which increased the capacity of the long term secured car park and the installation of new state-of-the-art car park controll system.

The Whyalla airport terminal is closed to the public between the hours of 9pm and 6am.

Residents can fly to and from Adelaide on the following regular passenger transport companies which operate out of the Airport.

Regional Express Airlines


Dual Airline Timetable for Whyalla to Adelaide(311 kb) - Flight duration to or from Adelaide is 45-50 minutes.

Both airlines and four car hire companies; Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty utilise the terminal building to service their customers during scheduled air services. At all other times the terminal is unattended.

Terminal facilities include public toilets (including disabled). The airport is closed to the public between the hours of 9pm and 6am, (unless authorised).

Runways and Taxiway Details

The airport has two runways, three taxiways, general aviation apron, a sealed regular passenger transport apron and a lawned helicopter parking area.


The main runway and taxiway have runway lighting installed for night time use, which is controlled by a PAALC (pilot activated aerodrome lighting control) system. Standby power is available for runway and taxiway lights.

Other Facilities

Other facilities housed at the airport include:

  • Refuelling facilities, owned and operated by Whyalla City Council (Avgas and Avtar are available by phoning the 24hr Council number on 8640 3444).
  • Comminity owned and operated Aeroclub.
  • Hangar.
  • Pump House and associated fire fighting tank and equipment.
  • Power House with backup 90KVa generator.

Payment for medium term car parking can be made at one of two pay stations; a cash or credit card pay station is located within the baggage arrivals hall, as well as a credit card only pay station located at the car park exit.

Purchase of Annual Passes can be arranged between the hours of 9am and 2.30pm at the Whyalla Airport.
