Whyalla Youth Advisory Committee

YAC logo 2016The Whyalla Youth Advisory Committee - known as the "YAC" - is a group of 13 local young people aged between 12-25 who meet at least once a month at the Whyalla City Council to address local youth issues.  The current YAC is only one year old and made up of a diverse group of young people from all walks of life.

The Whyalla Council YAC is proud to of been instrumental in bringing Ice Skating to the Whyalla community for a two month period. The group also hosted the inaugural Rainbow Run and Diversity Day during National Youth Week 2016, both major events were a resounding success.

YAC is currently advocating for increased mental health services in the local region, acknowledging there are gaps in this area which need to be addressed.

The YAC program provides an opportunity for young people to share their views and to work together to develop solutions to issues which affect their lives and their communities.  The YAC ensures local young people have a voice and are heard by the Elected Members of the Whyalla City Council with the opportunity to report their progress of activities at monthly Council meetings.

What does the YAC do?

YAC holds meetings to brainstorm new ideas including events to make Whyalla a better and more pleasant place for young people to live and work. The YAC also provides advice to organisations which seek youth opinion, several YAC members act on committees in an advisory capacity for local organisations.

Being involved in YAC is rewarding and fun, YAC members are involved in the following:

  • Organising awesome activities and events throughout the year for youth such as National Youth Week.
  • Accessing free training.
  • Meeting new people.
  • Increasing education and employment opportunities.
  • Having fun and being involved in innovative opportunities.
  • Increasing awareness on local youth issues.
  • Advocating for youth, programs and youth activities, including youth with disabilities.

Local committee members are extremely active and outcome focused, if you would like to learn more about YAC please click on the following link which will take you to our website, which has been developed by YAC member Ethan Klobucar.
