Whyalla Youth Advisory Committee

YAC logo 2016Whyalla Youth Advisory Committee - known as the "YAC" - is a group of 14 young people aged between 12-25 who meet at least once a month at the Whyalla City Council to address local youth issues. The present YAC is currently in its second year of operation, the YAC is a diverse group of young people from all walks of life.

So what is the YAC Program?Rainbow Run registration desk

The YAC program provides an opportunity for young people to share their views and to work together to develop solutions to issues which affect their lives and their communities. The YAC ensures local young people have a voice and are heard by the Elected Members of the Whyalla City Council with the opportunity to report their progress of activities at monthly Council meetings.

What does the YAC do?

The YAC holds meetings to brainstorm new ideas including events to make Whyalla a better and more pleasant place for young people to live and work. The YAC also provides advice to organisations which seek youth opinion, several YAC members act on committees in an advisory capacity for local organisations, including youth mental health and disability awareness.

Being involved in YAC is rewarding and fun, YAC members are/have involved in the following:

  • Organising awesome activities and events throughout the year for youth such as National Youth Week
  • Accessing free training
  • Meeting new people
  • Increasing education and employment opportunities
  • Having fun and being involved in innovative opportunities
  • Increasing awareness on local youth issues
  • Advocating for youth, programs and youth activities, including youth with disabilities
  • Youth Parliament attendance

The Whyalla City Council YAC is proud to have delivered the following activities to the youth community:

  • Ice Skating
  • Inaugural Rainbow Run and Diversity Day 2016
  • UneARTh Festival Rainbow Run 2017
  • National Youth Week Fair Go 2017
  • School Holiday Programs
  • Movies in the Park

The YAC has recently received funding through the Stronger Communities Program for a project called the YAC Shack, the purpose of this is to fit out a funky retro caravan as an events mobile and a travelling inflatable cinema system which can be set up within an hour to enable us to host movies for the youth community, stay tuned for information!

The YAC is currently advocating for increased mental health services in the local region, acknowledging there are gaps in this area which need to be addressed, we are doing this by working one on one with headspace Pt Augusta.

Local committee members are extremely active and outcome focused, if you would like to learn more about YAC please click on the following link which will take you to our website, which has been developed by the current YAC Mayor Ethan Klobucar. http://www.whyallayac.com
