Grab your gloves and lend a hand for this year’s Clean Up Australia Day.
This year’s Clean Up Australia Day event will be held on Sunday, March 6, with two dedicated registration sites.
Registration sites will be set up at the Whyalla Wetlands and Norton Park on McRitchie Crescent, providing greater opportunities for all community members to lend a hand on the day.
A free barbecue and cold drink will be provided to all volunteers on the day.
The council is working in partnership with Centacare Catholic Family Services Whyalla to bring the second registration event for the day, with a clean-up site being set up in the western part of the city.
Centacare is also assisting by cooking a barbecue at Norton Park for all volunteers taking part in the area.
Whyalla City Council acting mayor Tom Antonio said he hoped all residents would play a part in Clean Up Australia Day in some way.
“Whether you get your colleagues out and about to pick up some rubbish, or you participate as part of your school group, or you come along to register as an individual or group on the day, we all need to play a part in cleaning up our community for Clean Up Australia day,” Mr Antonio said.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a great initiative to encourage the community to lend a hand in looking after their city,” Mr Antonio said.
“Unfortunately we play a major part in the pollution of our nation, and it is events such as Clean Up Australia Day that allow us the opportunity to right some wrongs, even if it is on behalf of others in our community who are doing the wrong thing.
“Clean Up Australia Day is also a timely reminder to us all that we need to look after our environment and ensure that those around us are doing the right thing by putting their rubbish in the correct bins and disposing of all large items and materials appropriately.
“This is our home, and we need to look after it.”
Registration sites will be open from 10am until 1pm on Sunday, March 6, or groups can register to participate in a clean-up prior to March 6.
