Big day of celebrations on January 26

Thursday, January 9, 2020

Whyalla’s Australia Day celebrations are back on the beachfront and back in a big way for 2020.

This year’s Whyalla Australia Day celebrations are on Sunday, January 26 at the foreshore between 4pm and 9pm with a packed program of free entertainment and activities.

The highlights of the day will include the presentation of our Australia Day Citizen Awards winners and a group citizenship ceremony as a bunch of Whyalla people become official Aussies.

The fun starts with kite demos, kids’ activities including a jumping castle, bubble soccer, rock wall and more including displays by the Eyre Reptile and Wildlife Park.

To get active there will be a thong-throwing competition and ice cream-eating challenge open to people of all ages.

Council Events and Tourism Development Partner, Rebecca Neilson said the move back to the foreshore for the Australia Day Celebrations was exciting with the option to switch back to Ada Ryan Gardens if the weather isn’t friendly for the foreshore.

“We have one of the best foreshores in Australia, so what better place to celebrate Australia Day,” Rebecca said.

“It has been held in Ada Ryan Gardens for the past two years due to the weather, so fingers crossed for a nice sunny day so we can celebrate Australia Day in true Whyalla foreshore style.

“If it turns out bit hot or windy, we can always switch back to our wonderful, sheltered gardens.”

HIGHLIGHT: There will be fireworks subject to safe weather conditions.

This huge day wraps up with a fireworks display from 9pm depending on safe weather conditions. Mindful of the recent bushfires around Australia, the fireworks will only go ahead if the conditions are safe and Council will be collecting money at the celebrations to go towards the bushfire victims and firefighters.

“Everyone loves the fireworks but we are aware, in the current conditions, they must be completely safe for the city and surrounding bush,” Rebecca said.

“So while we can all enjoy the fireworks, we ask everyone to also think of those that have suffered in the recent fires and dig deep to donate to fire victims and our brave fire fighters.

“We can’t think of a more Aussie thing to do on our national day.”

The Beyond Bank 2020 Australia Day Fun Run will again play a big part in the day’s celebrations. It starts at 8am from Ada Ryan Gardens.

Whyalla’s Australia Day Celebrations are proudly presented by the City of Whyalla with sponsor partners Australia Day, Beyond Bank and Xtreme Kites & Paddle.
