A decision on Council's stance on rate capping was laid on the table by elected members

The City of Whyalla has deferred a decision and response to the State Government’s proposed rate capping legislation.

South Australian councils were asked to respond to the Local Government (Rate Oversight) Amendment Bill 2018 by last week. At a special meeting on Wednesday, August 1, Council’s elected members voted for the matter to be laid on the table.

With council elections coming up in November, Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer said the elected member’s decision reflected a desire to have the incoming council make the decision on the proposed rate capping legislation.

“The impact of this legislation, whether it is successful or not, will be felt by the city and the next Council in the years to come,” Mayor Breuer said.

“On that basis, the elected members felt it would be more appropriate for the incoming Council to establish its position on the matter as it is that Council that will need to deal with it going forward.”
