Council grants lease extension to Muradel

Whyalla City Council is continuing to support local industry, after it approved an additional lease extension for Muradel’s biofuel crude oil demonstration plant.

At Monday night’s council meeting the council resolved to provide Muradel with a lease extension for a five year period, as well as extend the lease to include an additional two hectares of land.

Muradel has highlighted a need to secure more land to cater for its immediate and subsequent needs for expansion, therefore requiring increased land.

At Monday’s meeting, elected members voted unanimously to support Muradel’s ongoing work, highlighting the importance of the project.

Whyalla mayor Jim Pollock said he was pleased the council could continue to support Muradel’s work in creating renewable fuel options.

“Muradel’s biofuel demonstration plant is such a wonderful project to have in Whyalla,” Mr Pollock said.

“Having witnessed the work going on at Muradel’s demonstration site I strongly believe this development has the potential to put Whyalla on the map for renewable projects, especially if it progresses to the commercialised stage.

“I look forward to seeing the project continue to grow and subsequently establish us as a region supporting renewable resources.”

Currently operating on 1.6 hectares of land, Muradel’s request for an additional two hectares comes as welcome news as the company considers expanding its current works.

Whyalla City Council approved Muradel’s request for a two year lease in January 2013, with Muradel’s demonstration plant being officially opened in November 2014.
