Mobile vendor policy to be developed

A new draft policy addressing mobile vendors in Whyalla will be released for community comment, following a decision at the latest Whyalla City Council meeting.

Council’s City Strategy and Policy Committee had previously resolved to seek a report on the feasibility of pop-up cafes in the Whyalla Foreshore area.

However, Planning Manager Jason Willcocks reported to Council that, in reviewing the issue, the process for considering and approving permits for mobile van vendors required broader consideration throughout the whole city, not just at the foreshore.

Mr Willcocks said work involved had proven a more complex matter than originally envisaged, culminating in the seeking of legal advice.

The new policy, in addition to its purpose for administration requirements, will include specific criteria to enable Council to determine if a proposed mobile vendor was a permanent establishment and areas that may be suitable for mobile vendors to operate.

The draft is expected to be released within a week and if there are no substantive comments the policy will be adopted and implemented.
