New Whyalla Airport terminal
prepares for first arrivals

Flights in and out of Whyalla will commence operations through the city’s new airport terminal on Sunday.

The highly anticipated upgrade and expansion of the former terminal building in conjunction with major re-development of adjacent car parks has been achieved at a cost of just under $3 million, according to Whyalla Council’s Airport Upgrade Project Manager, Joshua Sampson.

Opening of the new terminal will also see reintroduction of car parking charges on Monday, July 14.

Mr Sampson said that the normal parking fee had been waived during construction as compensation to airport users for unavoidable inconveniences caused during the various works programs.

With the re-establishment of parking charges, users will still receive the first 30 minutes free – allowing them to welcome or farewell family, friends or business visitors without incurring a parking fee.

Mr Sampson said some supplementary works, including landscaping, was still to be completed ready for an official opening of the new facilities in early August.

Works have included:

  • Doubling the size of the previous terminal to include increased seating and a business lounge.
  • Creation of a glazed screened alfresco viewing area.
  • Provision of a new, dedicated rental car park.
  • Increased capacity of the long-term secured car park.
  • Upgrade of the medium-term car park.
  • Installation of a new state-of-the-art car park control system.
  • Introduction of a dedicated taxi rank and drop-off parking immediately in front of the terminal.
  • Substantial landscaping.
  • Incorporating provision for a future café operator.

The project has been supported by funding from the Australian Government (Regional Development Australia Fund) and the Government of SA (Enterprise Zone Fund,) as well as funding from Council.
