Whyalla is hosting the Brand South Australia 2017 Regional Showcase Awards

Whyalla has been in the spotlight for all the right reasons in the past few months and it now gets the chance to host an event that spreads the glow throughout South Australia.

The Eyre Peninsula city was being acknowledged as a regional centre “on the move” even before the landmark sale of Arrium and its Whyalla steelworks to the GFG Alliance. Gaining the honour of hosting the first of the new and improved Brand South Australia regional showcase awards is just another sign of the upward path Whyalla is tracking.

brandThe 2017 Regional Showcase Awards celebration evening is being held on Friday night, October 6, at the Westlands Hotel Motel in Whyalla. It is an annual event with 17 years history of celebrating the achievements of individuals, groups and businesses that have made significant contributions to regional South Australia.

Regional Showcase Co-ordinator Ruby Hannam said Whyalla’s hosting rights for the award’s new format, that sees an even greater focus on story-telling and connecting with communities, was recognition of the city’s standing in the South Australian regional landscape and the positive vibe that is now coming from the region.

“Whyalla is perfectly placed as a central and significant city in regional South Australia,” Ms Hannam said.

“Hosting this showcase will build on the positivity that we’ve seen in Whyalla over the past few months while promoting the whole of South Australia.

“It is a vote of confidence in Whyalla and recognition the city and region is going forward.

“Brand South Australia is a very proud and excited to be hosting this first state-wide regional celebration in Whyalla.”

Whyalla Deputy Mayor Rick Santucci said the timing of these awards couldn’t have been better for the region.

“Whyalla is the perfect venue and this is the perfect time for us to showcase the success stories in regional South Australia,” Cr Santucci said.

“This city has taken enormous steps forward in the last few months and we’d like to think we epitomise what this showcase is all about … positivity, connecting with community and a regional success story.

“Our people, our industries, our community groups and our city leaders continue to make an enormous contribution to this magnificent state and we can proudly say our recent success in saving a key industry and jobs in our region would be an inspiration to the whole of South Australia.”

sundropNominations for the awards are now sought throughout the year for individuals, organisations and groups that inspire and go above and beyond in making a difference in their regional community. These nominations, which will now be for next year's awards, are turned into feature stories by a team of journalists and then put up for voting on the Inside South Australia website and via other news and social media outlets.”

The community gets its chance to vote for the People’s Choice Award while the Community Award and the Business Award is voted on by regional councils, sponsors and VIPs.

“While there will be three awards given, this showcase is more about telling the stories of a whole range of great achievements in regional South Australia,” Ms Hannam said.

“The great story telling on these individuals, groups and businesses enables them to be shared across the state and country to give the recognition they deserve.”
