Message from Mr Chris Cowley Chief Executive Officer, City of Whyalla

“I have serious concern about unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations of corruption made against the Council, various employees of the Council and, specifically, the Mayor and Councillor Tim Breuer. These allegations have been made public through social media by Mr Adam Hammond. They are without basis, unfounded and not supported by any evidence. They are just that, allegations, they have no basis in law or fact and merely serve to cast aspersions without any accountability from the person making the allegations. My concern is that such behaviours by Mr Hammond fuels speculation and innuendo and can have an unfair and detrimental impact upon the individuals concerned. Mr Hammond has been invited to convey his concerns to the appropriate authority and to refrain from making such statements, not only because it is an offence under the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption Act 2012, but because   his comments may contain defamatory content and may amount to a criminal defamation of the public officers he has targeted.

As the Chief Executive Officer of the Council I wish to reassure the residents, ratepayers and the wider community that I have taken the appropriate steps necessary to address the concerns arising from the conduct of Mr Hammond, but I will not engage in any discussion about the issue. I also wish to convey to the staff of the Council that you have my full support during this challenging time and I encourage  everyone to remain focused on delivering the Council’s strategic objectives and continue making the positive contribution to the community of the City of Whyalla that you do on a daily  basis."
