Expressions sought for a commissioned artwork for the Reconciliation Action Plan

Whyalla is the home of the Barngarla people and the Whyalla City Council Reconciliation Working Group would like to commission an artwork that reflects the experience of the First Nations Custodians of the land on which we live and work.

This work will be used as visual imagery for the printed version of our Reconciliation Action Plan prepared by the Whyalla City Council Reconciliation Working Group for the City of Whyalla and take pride of place in our Building in Darling Terrace.

We invite any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist to submit an expression of interest to council@whyalla.sa.gov.au with examples of their work (website links or digital files), a brief artist biography and a statement of intent with regard to creating the work for the Whyalla City Council. This may be done orally by contacting Deb on 86453444 or 0409906545 or by email at deborah.hughes@whyalla.sa.gov.au. Please also contact Deb if you have any further queries or need any extra assistance with your submission.

Submissions of interest need to be in before (two weeks from release date) and the work will need to be presented 4 weeks from the date of offer of the commission. Works can be created specifically for this commission or be a previous work that the artist considers appropriate for this purpose.

The artwork should reflect local elements and concepts, encapsulate the Whyalla City Council’s Unearth logo colours. Preference will be given to artists who live and work in our local government area but artists from other areas are welcome to apply.

This commission will receive a fee of $2000 payable on completion of the artwork into a nominated bank account. The Whyalla City Council will retain ownership of the work and be able to use the work or parts of the work within the Reconciliation Action Plan and other uses as council deems appropriate.
