The Whyalla Wetlands is situated on what was historically Whyalla's first airport, with the old hanger restored and currently used as a club house.
It was suggested that the site be developed as a Wetlands in the late 1980's to early 1990's. By 1994 the four ponds that form the Whyalla wetlands were excavated.
The site was bare of most vegetation post construction, and the race was on to cover the topsoil with mulch and planted vegetation to control wind blown erosion issues. With the regeneration of Salt Bush and Samphire, as well as lawns and mulch, the site was eventually developed to a point where there was no problem with windblown dust.
However, there still existed the issues of erosion caused by water. The sodic soils proved to be highly erosive, with significant rain events washing these erosive soils off the surrounding land surface, and into the ponds. This issue, along with habitat construction, is the main focus of the current works at the site.
